The Making of a Video Epic

eLearnIT records a PowerBuilder .NET success story video interview

Last quarter I received an assignment from Sybase marketing to interview Don Clayton of Intertech Consulting of Houston TX to discuss his recent PowerBuilder Classic to PowerBuilder .NET success project.  Fresh from my IDC PowerBuilder .NET migration seminar experience with the well-known industry analyst Al Hilwa, I drafted an outline of a conversation with Don.  I included all the elements of how I thought the story should flow; an introduction, what the customer needs and pain were, what Don and his team did and how it solved the problem.  I shot the outline over to Don and he filled in lots of detail.  Over the next few weeks were shot the script back and forth a whole bunch of times until we both felt good about its content.  We then conducted a series of conference calls in which we rehearsed and refined the script until we both felt pretty good and confident that it expressed the story well.

As Providence would have it, ISUG scheduled me for a .NET Migration presentation in Houston right around the time we wanted to do our video shoot.  I scheduled our get together for the day before the seminar. Through an old friend in town, I was able to locate a top shelf news camaraman who took the engagement to record our conversation.  We met bright an early at the Sybase office in Houston.  The cameraman was really key in setting up the ad-hoc studio in a conference room.  He had an intuitive feel for capturing an interview and set us off on the right foot.  Lisa Hopkins, the PowerBuilder marketing manager sent us some colorful backdrops to enhance the scenery.  Here's a picture of what our scene looked like from behind the camera.

After getting over our jitters, we settled in to have our conversation.  We pretty much rolled straight through our script.  At the end we repeated some sections individually so we could have close up and cut away shots.  Don located a professional video editing shop and handled producing the final piece.  I think the final result is well worth a look see.  Don has a great PowerBuilder .Net success story that is worth hearing.

The guts of the technical description starts about 4:30 into the show.

Long Live PowerBuilder
